Force Email Notification Links To Open In The Official Facebook App

AppAdvice writes, Jailbreak developers are always looking to improve our beloved iDevices. Now, one jailbreak tweak ? called FaceMail ? makes it possible to have Facebook email notification links open within the Facebook iOS app, rather than in Safari. Handy, right? As Redmond Pie reports: FaceMail changes that behavior by creating a link between the Mail and Facebook apps, meaning that when a link is tapped from an official Facebook email account, it will open up in the installed Facebook app and take the user to the notifications section rather than trying to force a log-in through Mobile Safari....

Polish economic growth slows to 2.4 percent in Q2

(AP) ? New data show the Polish economy grew 2.4 percent year-on-year in the second quarter, a sharper slowdown than experts had expected.

The economy grew 4.3 percent in 2011 before slowing to 3.5 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of this year. Several economists and the central bank head had predicted that second quarter growth would come in higher, at around 2.9 percent.

Poland, the largest of the ex-communist countries to join the European Union in past years, has enjoyed fast growth since entering the bloc in 2004 thanks to an inflow of EU subsidies and foreign investments. It was the only EU country to avoid recession during the crisis of 2008-09.

Poland is expected to keep growing through 2013, though at a much more modest level.

Daytrading, Stock Trading, Investing and Forex Trading ? The Value ...

Some go on to make enough to live on, some an especially cushty living and some make a genuine fortune. There are numerous investors who make trading their sole occupation. Others return to their old job, annoyed and scared of ever doing anything different and giving up on their hopes of the life they actually wish to live. Here's a story about a man?? What if you might leverage a powerful solid research of market factors and patterns, correctly envisioning the best stocks to buy? What if androids can do all of that for you? These are what automated stock market dealing robotic systems do best. What if you had a technique to tell which stocks are intending to make a slaughtering in the market? Spot the ?gainers? earlier without counting on brokers or sly insider information. These systems scan the market steadily for the best emerging stocks. Stocks are influenced daily by foreseeable information and arithmetic.

This suggests you quickly know which stocks are going to make a gain. You can purchase inexpensive early and sell higher later earning masses of bucks each day or thousands of bucks each week on your investment with the best stockmarket trading system. The advantages of an automatic share trading robotic system are giant. As the more well capable you are on the language then you'll get more successful. The best thing about the stock market trader software is the incontrovertible fact that they're programmed to recognise the trends and advise you of which stocks are probably going to be good to make an investment in. * There are new technologies out there now that will seriously improve the probability for successful stock market trading.

They also are comparatively cheap and easy to utilise. If you're think about making an investment in a stock market trader software then it'd be to your benefit to learn all you are able to about the various type and the good points and bad points of every one before purchasing one. This is effective as the market advances in patterns which repeat themselves often each 7 years typically. Some automated stock market trading systems particularly target penny stocks and shares when attempting to find trading prospects.

This may be seen and shown by the undeniable fact that we are going into and out of recessions continually whether or not it's larger or smaller one or more times ten years. This is effective because penny stocks and shares are the least expensive, most uncertain and wildly changing investments to be found in the market as it is far easier to persuade their position and price with less trading activity. As an example, the 1st automated securities dealing system pick which was aimed at penny stocks and shares especially which I invested in was priced at $.18 a share.

Native American Spiritual Beliefs Influential in Spurring Youth to Avoid

This article caught my eye.

A group from Mexico is ?caravanning? across the US to raise awareness of the enormous drug trafficking problems in Mexico that are at least in part related to illegal drug problems and violence in the US.***
The caravan ?will be stopping in my hometown, Toledo OH, this coming Wednesday.
I seem to recall the leader, Mexican poet?Javier Sicilia, ?was features on a PBS News Hour segment a few months back.

To be honest, I am still pondering on whether or not illegal drugs should be made legal. Certainly the present system of incarceration is not working.
At the very least, treatment/prevention programs should be stepped up, replacing much of the current court system?s misguided efforts.
Even though our country has a strong tradition of the separation of church and state, I believe prevention/treatment ideally includes a spiritual/religious dimension.

Once promising area of research. Even though it only studies one broad culture, it does invite further study into other cultures.

Native American Spiritual Beliefs Influential in Spurring Youth to Avoid Drugs and Alcohol

From the 20 August 2012 article at Science News Daily

New research indicates that urban native American youth who follow American Indian traditional spiritual beliefs are less likely to use drugs and alcohol. Arizona State University social scientists will present their findings at the 107th Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Association in Denver, Colorado.

?

Among the general native American youth population, higher rates of substance (both drug and alcohol) abuse are reported than among their non-native American counterparts. They also are more likely to use heavier amounts, initiate substance use earlier, and have more severe consequences from substance use, according to past research.

Native Americans typically do not separate spirituality from other areas of their lives, making it a complex, cultural and intertwined aspect of their daily existence.

Researchers found that adherence to native American beliefs was the strongest predictor of anti-drug attitudes, norms, and expectations. Concerning substance use, aspects of spirituality and religion associated with lower levels of use were affiliation with the Native American Church and following Christian beliefs?

***From the flyer I rec?d the other day

?

The Caravan began its U.S. journey in San Diego on August 12. Nearly 80 Caravaneros will visit two dozen U.S. cities on the way to their final stop in Washington, D.C., in September.

Victims of the violence in Mexico will share their testimony of suffering and courage. From Jalisco, the mother of Jose Luis Arana Aguilar will speak of her son?s disappearance last January after making one last call to his children?s day care, reminding them to feed his children. From Coahuila, the girlfriend of Jose Antonio Robledo Fernandez will tell of how she heard the abductors of her boyfriend insult and beat him before he disappeared.

Leading the Caravan is Mexican poet Javier Sicilia, whose son, Juan Francisco, was brutally murdered last year. He then travelled with MPJD caravans in Mexico collecting stories of the destruction caused by the so-called war against drugs and organized crime, which the United States has funded with over $1.5 billion in military equipment and training. The result? As Sicilia writes, ?The 60,000 deaths, the 10,000 disappearances, and the 160,000 internally displaced people during the past six years are tragedies caused directly by failed security policies.?

Though their grief knows no end or resolution, they are committed to telling their stories to the American public so that their humanity can move us to action. When the horrific statistics are seen in the pain, suffering, and courage of real people who are reaching out to the victims of the drug war north of the border, the foundation for change can be built.

Sicilia and other movement leaders believe that carrying the campaign across the border underscores the role of the United States. Drug war ideology was born here?putting an end to it must start here too.

Simplifying genetic codes to look back in time

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? Tokyo Institute of Technology researchers show simpler versions of the universal genetic code can still function in protein synthesis. In addition to understanding early primordial organisms, the research could lead to applications preventing non-natural genetically modified materials from entering the natural world.

Daisuke Kiga and co-workers at the Department of Computational Intelligence and Systems Science at Tokyo Institute of Technology, together with researchers across Japan, have shown that simpler versions of the universal genetic code, created by knocking out certain amino acids, can still function efficiently and accurately in protein synthesis [1].

The researchers conducted experiments altering the genetic code in a test tube. They removed the amino acid tryptophan and discovered that the resulting simplified code could still generate proteins as before.

By knocking out individual amino acids and observing the effects, scientists will be able to understand how early primordial organisms may have functioned and evolved. There will be also numerous applications for simplified genetic strains in laboratory experiments, which could potentially prevent non-natural genetically modified materials from entering the natural world.

Background and future developments

Daisuke Kiga and co-workers of the Department of Computational Intelligence and Systems Science at Tokyo Institute of Technology, together with researchers across Japan, have shown that simpler versions of the universal genetic code -- created by knocking out certain amino acids -- can still function efficiently and accurately in protein synthesis. The researchers conducted cell-free experiments altering the genetic code.

All current life forms on Earth have 20 amino acids in their genetic code. However, scientists believe that this was not always the case, and that organisms evolved from simpler genetic codes with fewer amino acids. Amino acids are linked in accordance with codons -- a 3-letter combination of the four base nucleotides (G, A, T and C) in a genetic code. There are 64 possible codons, and so most amino acids are produced by several different codons, except for tryptophan and methionine, which are generated by just one codon each. Tryptophan is thought to be the most recent amino acid to become part of the universal genetic code.

Kiga and his team took the codon for tryptophan, and reassigned it to code for the amino acid alanine instead. They discovered the resulting simplified code could still generate proteins as before. The researchers also reassigned another codon originally for the amino acid cysteine and replaced it with serine. This simplified code without cysteine was able to synthesize an active enzyme.

By knocking out individual amino acids and observing the effects, scientists will be able to understand how early primordial organisms may have functioned and evolved. There are also numerous applications for simplified genetic codes in laboratory experiments and clinical trials.

Before emergence of the current universal genetic code, primitive organisms that may have used only 19 amino acids could benefit from horizontal gene transfer, where cells transfer genetic material between one another. This is a key method used by bacteria to develop resistance to drugs. An organism with the current universal genetic code for 20 amino acids would have competitive advantages in its ability to synthesize proteins, but could not engage in genetic transfer with the rest of the population. Only when a suitably large gene pool of organisms with 20 amino acids is available could horizontal transfer occur between these life forms and they could then thrive. This implies that organisms with a simpler genetic code could be used as a barrier in laboratory experiments, preventing new genetically modified strains from escaping to the natural world.

GAME CHANGE: Mitt Romney Changes Message ... - Business Insider

I have been tough on Mitt Romney's economic plan, which is vague, lacking in important details, and centered around giving the richest Americans and biggest corporations another tax cut.

The plan has general themes that make sense for the long term, but it does not address the specific problem the US is currently facing, which is a lack of spending power and jobs in the middle class.

It's no surprise that the highest-earning Americans would be eager to vote for someone who will reduce their taxes, but tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans will not solve the problem. Because the problem in our economy is not that the highest-earners don't have money to spend and invest. It's that the middle class--the customers--are broke.

So now it's time to give credit where it's due.

Mitt Romney has recently changed how he is presenting his economic plan, and the new story is likely to be far more persuasive to mainstream Americans than the old one.

Importantly, Romney's new message also makes it sound as though he may be changing his economic plan in some key ways--ways that could have a more positive economic impact in the near term.?

Specifically, it sounds as though Romney may now support:

  • taking a more gradual approach to deficit reduction,
  • postponing government spending cuts, and
  • giving his tax cut to everyone in the country, instead of making it "revenue neutral" by eliminating tax deductions that disproportionately help poor and middle-income Americans.

Such an approach would obviously not help the deficit trajectory--in fact, it would make it vastly worse--but it acknowledges what many in the Republican Party have refused to acknowledge in the last few years, which is that "taking our medicine" immediately on the deficit will also clobber the economy. (Remember when the Republicans in Congress threatened to force the country to default rather than increase the debt ceiling?)

What's more, after many years of campaigning, Romney has developed a highly Presidential demeanor. Given that very few people actually understand how the economy works (including, importantly, many economists), being demonstrably "right" about the economy is much less important than being confident and persuasive on the points that people care about--namely, income, taxes, and jobs. And Romney is now sounding not only confident on this, but persuasive.

Just as important, he is sounding reasonable. And that will go a very long way.

So this is going to be a tough fight for the next few months. It's no surprise that the odds that Barack Obama will be re-elected have dropped slightly in recent weeks. (Poll guru Nate Silver of the New York Times now gives Obama a 69% chance of winning, down slightly from 70%).

Below is a link to an interview with FOX Business (from yesterday) in which Romney articulated his new economic message.

Here are the key points:

  • There is no longer any mention of tax cuts for the richest Americans (previously described as "job creators") and huge corporations. Rather, the emphasis is on tax cuts for the middle class.? This is smart for two reasons: First, the richest Americans actually don't "create the jobs"--a healthy economic ecosystem creates the jobs. Second, most Americans understand that the richest Americans and companies already have plenty of cash, while the vast majority of Americans do not.? Importantly, this new message is very close to Obama's plan, which also calls for extending the middle-class tax cuts.
  • Romney outlines a very reasonable energy policy. This policy calls for America to move aggressively toward energy-Independence, including by building the Keystone oil pipeline that Obama has blocked. Obama's stance on the pipeline has never sounded reasonable--we need oil, we already have thousands of pipelines, we're currently still importing too much oil from fanatical people who hate us, and the Canadian oil sands will be developed whether we buy the oil or not--so this pragmatism makes sense.
  • Most importantly, Romney sounds as though he is backing away from an immediate focus on deficit reduction in favor of near-term stimulus.? Romney is now arguing for a moratorium on current tax rates and government spending to avoid the "fiscal cliff" that will otherwise hit the country on January 1--a cliff that, according to the Congressional Budget Office, will throw the economy back into a recession. Extending the current policies will vastly increase the projected deficit, but Romney no longer seems concerned about that. He makes vague references to minor future spending cuts on "discretionary non-defense spending" (a tiny portion of federal spending) and still suggests he might eliminate some tax deductions. But he refuses to say which deductions he might eliminate and now says he will make certain that his tax changes do not increase the middle-class's tax bill or share of the overall tax burden.? According to the Tax Policy Center, this will be impossible to do while also cutting taxes radically for the richest Americans, so it appears Romney is backing away from the idea that his tax cuts will be revenue neutral.

Overall, Romney's new message on the economy is likely to be resonate much better than his old ones, which emphasized tax cuts for the richest Americans.

And Romney seems much less concerned about near-term deficits than he used to be.

Rather, he appears to be embracing the idea that stimulus that comes at least partially in the form of government spending is a good idea right now.

And that's encouraging. Because he's right.

Here Comes the Hillbilly, Again

Alana “Honey Boo Boo Child” Thompson

Alana ?Honey Boo Boo Child? Thompson

Somehow America always goes a little off the rails in the allegedly slow month of August, and this year?s party is as wild as any. Republicans can?t figure out how babies are made; cutting-and-pasting an article from The New Yorker into your Newsweek column is no longer a fireable offense; and all the way down in McIntyre, Ga., there is a mother who feeds her child a Mountain-Dew-and-Red-Bull concoction before the 6-year-old gets onstage at beauty pageants. June Shannon, who stars with her daughter Alana ?Honey Boo Boo Child? Thompson in TLC?s controversial hit Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, would have provoked a firestorm even if what she calls ?go-go juice? were the only sin she was broadcasting all over Christendom. All that caffeine, pop-culture commentators everywhere clucked, and all that sugar.

Lost in the outrage is just how squarely ?go-go juice? fits into America?s long tradition of ?white trash? entertainment, which for decades has elevated characters like Honey Boo Boo into the nation?s objects of fun. The Pepsi Co. borrowed the Mountain Dew brand-name from slang for moonshine; in the 1960s, it was explicitly advertised as a ?hillbilly? drink. The campaign?s entertaining TV ads, which you can watch on YouTube, were scored by twangy banjos and errant buckshot and plotted around a ?stone-hearted gal? who will open her heart to you if you only take a swig. Watching these old videos after an episode or two of Honey Boo Boo makes at least one thing clear: The hillbilly has regained the spotlight in American culture.

Mountain Dew.

Mountain Dew.Courtesy Popsop.com.

As Anthony Harkins observes in Hillbilly: A Cultural History of an American Icon, one of the hillbilly?s signature moves is to peak, popularity-wise, just when Americans sense that things in general are headed south. Its first true zenith came in the depressed 1930s, a handmaiden to the birth of commercial country music. Another arrived in the turbulent 1960s, when The Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres and Hee Haw were in their prime. (Those are hardly the only examples, of course: It also popped up in the Ma and Pa Kettle films of the 1940s and 1950s and Paul Webb?s 1930s Esquire cartoons about ?The Mountain Boys,? among other places.)

Though the term first referred to mountaineers in the Appalachians and the Ozarks, the hillbilly trope spread to cover pretty much all non-urban territory in America, joined by its cousins in cultural iconography, the ?redneck? and ?white trash.? Today, people even apply that last term to residents of certain New Jersey beachfronts, for instance. Yet, as Harkins points out, no matter where an alleged country bumpkin comes from, he will be derided for his crass behavior. And such ridicule has always been politically coded: The hillbilly figure allows middle-class white people to offload the venality and sin of the nation onto some other constituency, people who live somewhere?anywhere?else. The hillbilly?s backwardness highlights the progress more upstanding Americans in the cities or the suburbs have made. These fools haven?t crawled out of the muck, the story goes, because they don?t want to.

This idea that the hillbilly?s poverty is a choice allows more upscale Americans to feel comfortable while laughing at the antics before them. It also pushes some people to embrace the stereotype as a badge of honor. ?Guitars, Cadillacs, hillbilly music / It?s the only thing that keeps me hangin? on,? Dwight Yoakam once sang. For more contemporary examples of re-appropriation, you can attend any number of Tea Party rallies. The classist term ?redneck,? originally coined to indicate those who worked so hard and so long in the sun that they sported sunburns in the designated anatomical location, likewise has been adopted in the name of all that?s good and holy. What?s more American than a hard day?s work.

June Shannon is a reappropriator par excellence. One of her signature phrases on Here Comes Honey Boo Boo is a call to, as she puts it, ?Redneck-ognize.? And yet all the cultural chatter that?s attended Honey Boo Boo has been less than affectionate. The word of the day across the media is ?apocalypse??that is, the show is a sign of it. It?s not just the caffeine highs, either. It?s a family of six chopping up a roadkill deer for dinner, belly-flopping in the mud, and?those with delicate constitutions may want to avert their eyes for this next part?farting in public. Even critics who enjoy the show do so from a crouched, defensive posture. People seem to think this has all gone a little too far. Even the Today Show is starting to wonder if reality television just might be ?exploitative.?

I?m not a Toddlers & Tiaras fan, so I missed out on Alana?s big splash on that show earlier this year. Beauty pageants in general are foreign and noxious to me: I can barely muster the energy to put on lip gloss and mascara. But I watched Honey Boo Boo out of curiosity about the fuss, and found myself, somewhat surprisingly, relating to Alana and her milieu. I have fond memories of that Dwight Yoakam song playing softly on my parents? radio as we drove home through the dark from a visit to my grandparents? house in rural Quebec. My family isn?t from the South?we?re not even from the United States?but I know enough of the land Honey Boo Boo lives in to be dubious of simple accusations of bad parenting and worse morals.

The practices are different, of course, and no, I?m not wild about the caffeine and sugar thing, either. Alana?s little-girl grandiosity must become exhausting when experienced in more than 30-minute increments. But the people raising her are clearly aware of your disdain. Shannon can be delightfully funny when she selfconsciously plays with her hillbilly image, warning the audience that she?s about to ?scratch her bugs,? or speaking of her beauty routine: ?Granted, I ain?t the most beautimous out the box, but a little paint on this barn, shine it back to its original condition. ?Cause it shines up like it?s brand new.?

That?s not to say the humor is always comfortable or even funny. Alana?s trademark phrases and mannerisms??a dollar makes me holler,? a particular head swivel she does?are informed by racist stereotypes of black women. This ambiguous borrowing from black culture has always been part of the hillbilly trope as well. Early commercial country music borrowed liberally from black folk music. (Hank Williams learned to play guitar, he said, from a black street performer.) And this borrowing often turned into racist mimicry: The Grand Ole Opry included minstrelsy shows in the 1920s and 1930s. Interestingly, the term ?white trash? may have been coined by black slaves in the early 19th century to describe poor white people in the South; American attitudes toward poor white people have long been tangled up with ?the race problem.?

And hillbilly stereotypes have always made it easier for middle-class whites to presume that racism is the exclusive province of ?that kind? of person. As Ta-Nehisi Coates has written, ?It is comforting to think of racism as species of misanthropy, or akin to child molestation, thus exonerating all those who bear no real hatred in their heart. It?s much more troubling to think of it as it?s always been?a means of political organization and power distribution.?

Sparkling Indian athletes at London Olympic 2012 | Info Skill Hub

Posted by admin on Aug 24, 2012 in Recreation | 0 comments

Though the Indian national anthem was not heard its athletes climbed the medal?s podium at London 2012. It was undoubtedly their most successful outing although India and Abhinav Bindra missed the gold this time around.

A total of 6 medals pronounced Indian?s best ever performance at the Summer Olympic Games since the modern games came into effect.

Even after all this we have people cribbing about India?s performance and how we sank to 55th on the medals table after having finished 50th in Beijing four years ago.

Indians rarely pursue sports seriously leaving apart the aspiring cricketers. The number of youngsters wanting to take up sports as a career is as few as the goals of the Indian hockey team in the recently concluded Olympics.

Our poor sports system prevents a talented sports person from the blossoming into a professional. Our sporting talent is extinguished due to lack of proper infrastructure, support from the government in terms of financial aid in the form of sponsors or right guidance from capable coaches. Families do not cheer on their young ones to settle for sports as a career option in India.

Then why are we crying hoarse over the fact that we could win only a handful of medals in the just concluded summer Olympics without possessing a culture for sports running in our lineage?

Olympic glory requires money, coaches, good diet, training abroad which come in short supply at the right time for most of the aspiring sportsmen in India. It is the correct output for what we have sown through the years with the exception of rare gems still enabling the Indian tricolor to flutter behind the medal?s podium.

Barcelona 1992 had plenty of first round exits, Atlanta 1996 it was a bronze for Leander Paes in tennis, Sydney 2000 was a jolting experience for most Indian followers back home as Karnam Malleshwari among 52 brought back a bronze, then three medals in Beijing 2008 portrays that feats of Indian athletes has turned.

The number of Indians making it into the finals of their respective events means we can finally enjoy our countrymen on the prime stage of the sporting realm

Mass killer Breivik ruled sane, gets 21-year sentence

Odd Andersen / AFP - Getty Images

Self-confessed mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik speaks with a lawyer at a court in Oslo on Friday.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Updated at 11:35 a.m. ET: OSLO -- A Norwegian court ruled Friday that confessed mass killer Anders Behring Breivik was sane, deciding he was criminally responsible for the massacre of 77 people last summer.

Reading the ruling, Judge Wenche Elisabeth Arntzen said that?"in a unanimous decision ... the court sentences the defendant to 21 years of preventive detention."?

However, such sentences can be extended under Norwegian law as long as an inmate is considered dangerous.?Experts have said Breivik is likely to spend the rest of his life behind bars.?Norway doesn't have the death penalty.

Prosecutors had demanded a verdict of insanity, a fate Breivik called "worse than death," while many of his victims had said only a sane person could have carried out such a complex attack.?

Breivik, 33, detonated a fertilizer bomb outside a government building that included the prime ministerial offices last July, killing eight, then gunned down 69 people, mostly teenagers, at the ruling Labor Party's youth camp on Utoya island.

After the ruling, Breivik told the court he would not appeal the decision.

"He is getting what he deserves," Alexandra Peltre, 18, whom Breivik shot in the thigh on Utoya, told Reuters. "This is karma striking back at him. I do not care if he is insane or not, as long as he gets the punishment that he deserves."?

Another survivor of the massacre, Eivind Rindal, told the Norwegian newspaper VG that ?it is important that the defendant gets his punishment but the most important thing is that he never gets out.?

?There are many who shared his extreme views in our society,? Rindal added, according to an English translation in the Telegraph newspaper.

Trine Aamodt, whose 19-year-old son was shot at Utoya, told VG she was ?happy with the verdict of sanity and am also very glad that there was consensus from all the judges.?

Guilt never a question
Guilt had never been a question in the trial as Breivik described in chilling detail how he hunted down his victims, some as young as 14, with a shot to the body and then one or more bullets to the head.

The killings shook this nation of five million people which had prided itself as a haven from much of the world's troubles, raising questions about the prevalence of far-right views as immigration rises.

Tens of thousands of people gathered in Oslo to sing a children's song calling for peace, as a protest against mass killer Anders Behring Breivik. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.

Few believe anyone would ever sign Breivik's release papers.?One of the reasons Breivik's attacks were presented in such gruesome detail during the trial was so that the horror of Oslo and Utoya would be well-documented for the day Breivik asks to be released.

Czech police accuse man of plotting Norway-like copycat terrorist attack

The court?s ruling actually imposed a minimum sentence of 10 years and a maximum of 21.

But Jo Stigen, a law professor at the University of Oslo, told NBCNews.com that Breivik was unlikely to be released for decades.

?This means as long as he is dangerous he will not be free. It?s a potential life sentence ? I can hardly see it will be considered he?s not dangerous in 30 or 40 years,? he said, speaking by phone from outside the court.

Labor Party secretary Raymond Johansen, center, hugs a relative of an Utoya massacre victim before Breivik's arrival in court on Friday.

After serving the 10-year minimum sentence, Breivik will be evaluated periodically. Stigen said it was ?theoretically possible? he could be released in 10 years, but added this was highly unlikely.

After 21 years, the prosecution can seek to have Breivik kept in prison -- Stigen said that ?most certainly they will? ? and a court will then decide whether to keep the mass killer in prison.

Norway prison seeks 'friends' to play hockey, chess with mass killer Breivik

'Tough year'
The trial and a commission of investigation into the country's worst violence since World War Two have kept Breivik on the front pages for the past 13 months and survivors said the verdict would finally bring some closure.

"It has been a tough year... but I don't want to be Utoya-Nicoline for the rest of my life," said Nicoline Bjerge Schie, a survivor of the shooting, ahead of the verdict.

Friends and family of his victims looked on Friday as Anders Breivik calmly describes chasing down and killing dozens of teenagers during a shooting spree last year on Utoya Island in Norway. Msnbc.com's Al Stirrett reports.

As a result of the ruling that he is sane, Breivik will be locked up in solitary confinement inside the maximum security Ila prison on the outskirts of Oslo.?He will return to his relatively spacious cells, enjoying the comforts of a computer, newspapers and a separate exercise room.

Anders Breivik to Norway court: I killed 77 people but am not guilty

One team of court appointed psychiatrists concluded Breivik was psychotic while another came to the opposite conclusion. To make the ruling more difficult, several other experts who testified described a series of mental conditions Breivik suffered from.

Polls showed that around 70 percent of Norwegians thought such a well-planned attack could not have been the work of a madman and Breivik must take responsibility rather than be dismissed as merely deranged.

The nation looks to rally after a bombing and shooting spree leaves 77 people dead.

Breivik himself argued for a verdict of sanity as he wanted the attack to be seen as a political statement rather than an act of lunacy.

He rejected criminal charges out of principle, saying he doesn't recognize the court's authority because it represents a political system that supports multiculturalism -- the reason why he targeted the Labor Party.

NBC News' Ian Johnston, Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

USDA Lifts PACA Reparation Sanctions on Illinois Produce Business

AMS No. 193-12

?

Nadine Wilkins (202)720-8998

?

WASHINGTON, Aug. 24, 2012 ? The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that Agri Sales Inc. satisfied a reparation order issued under the Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act (PACA).

?

Agri Sales Inc., of Wadsworth, Ill., has met its obligations and is now able to operate in the produce industry. Michael Z. Hughes was listed as the officer, director, and major stockholder of the business and may now be employed by or affiliated with any PACA licensee.

?

PACA provides for an administrative forum to handle disputes involving produce transactions; this may result in a reparation order being issued that requires damages to be paid by those not meeting their contractual obligations in buying and selling fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables. The USDA is required to suspend the license of a business that fails to pay PACA reparations awarded against it as well as impose restrictions against those principals determined to be responsibly connected to the business when the order is issued. Those individuals, including sole proprietors, partners, members, managers, officers, directors, or major stockholders, may not be employed by or affiliated with any PACA licensee without USDA-approval.

?

Once a reparation order is fully satisfied and it is confirmed that there are not any outstanding unpaid awards, USDA lifts the employment restrictions of the previously named responsibly connected individuals. USDA will only reinstate the license of a business to an active status if all reparation awards are satisfied and if the license is not terminated.

?

The Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), PACA Division, regulates fair trading practices of produce businesses operating subject to the PACA, which includes buyers, sellers, commission merchants, dealers, and brokers, within the fruit and vegetable industry. All oversight of actions related to the PACA are conducted by the AMS, an agency within the USDA.

?

In fiscal year 2011, USDA resolved approximately 2,000 claims filed under the PACA involving $31 million. This is just one more way the USDA continues to support the fruit and vegetable industry.

Intercollegiate Boxing: Olympic Boxing: Do We Even Care?

As the worst Olympic showing in U.S. history fades in our rear view mirrors, we are struggling to explain what has gone wrong with men?s boxing and how we can fix it. A generation ago the USA ruled; now, after a nearly three-decade nosedive, the program has finally crash-landed. We?ve gone from nine Gold Medals in 1984 to none in 2012; in fact, no men?s medals period.??

USA Boxing, the sport?s governing body is broken, shattered into failure?s familiar fragments: ego, politics, self-interest, blame, and ego (did I already say ego? good.). Barring the appointment of an old style boxing dictator, the kind of leader who damns torpedoes, raises funds, and tells prima donna athletes and coaches how it?s done, it won?t get fixed. Yet that?s not apt to happen. Instead, the 2016 Games will likely be one more fiasco that tumbles out of the USA Boxing clown car.??

But there?s no point in writing the same column you can find by the dozen through a Google search. There are darker questions fans seem afraid to ask, like do we, as a nation, still care about amateur boxing? Have the sport?s nagging stereotypes permanently muddied over the truth that boxing is still the most wholesome and honorable sport of all???

Youth boxing teaches violence and causes brain damage. Nobody wants these things.

The trouble is, that?s nonsense. Anyone close to the sport knows that amateur boxers are the last to take their skills to the streets. And it doesn?t matter that the National Safety Council ranks amateur boxing dead last among injury producing sports. The sight of someone getting punched in the head trumps the truth. Inveighing against boxing?s barbarity is practically a conversation starter at cocktail parties, alongside the weather.

??It wasn?t always this way. Our support of amateur boxing used to be unwavering. The sport was supported by a national infrastructure of community-based organizations like YMCAs, JCCs and city recreation programs. We used to know that boxing promotes youth development and even prevents delinquency.??

Now, Albany?s Quail Street Gym is the only entirely municipally funded boxing gym in the country. In its 12-years of operation, it?s produced 11 nationally ranked boxers, two of whom missed spots on Olympic Teams by one point in the Trials. Imagine if every municipality had such a gym. Imagine the effect it would have on the skill level of Team USA.??

Now imagine something else, which is what got me writing today?s column in the first place. Somebody asked me last weekend what happened to college boxing. Good question.??

A generation ago kids who came out of those community programs were rewarded for their dedication. They went to college on boxing scholarships. College boxing started in 1919, holding its first NCAA tournament in 1937. Three years later, when the University of Wisconsin hosted Washington State University, 15,000 fans dropped by. That same night at Madison Square Garden, only two-thirds as many saw Joe Louis defend his title against Johnny Paycheck. By the 1950s, over 200 colleges had boxing teams.??

But it all came crashing down on April 9, 1960. Charlie Mohr, a middleweight from the University of Wisconsin, was dropped in the second round of a national championship bout. Although the referee stopped the contest and Mohr walked to the locker room, he collapsed, dying eight days later of a brain hemorrhage. Yup, bad things happen in boxing, same as in other sports, just not as frequently.

Nonetheless, Sports Illustrated predicted back then that such a tragedy will ?doom the sport? (SI, 5/25/60). They were right. Boxing lost its NCAA status. Within a few years it resumed as a club sport here and there, but with no varsity standing, no paid coaches, and no scholarships.??

That club sport evolved into the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA). It?s comprised of only 35 schools, but let me tell you, it?s an amazing league. I got to feature it in Ring Magazine a year ago - mature athletes trained by the best coaches you will find.

???We may be the red-headed stepchildren on college campuses,? said Jim McNally, coach at the United States Naval Academy, ?but at our brigade championship we?ll get 5,000 people in the arena.?

???What happened to Charley Mohr hasn?t happened in, what, 50 years?? said Dr. Ray Barone, Director of Boxing at West Point. ?That says something.???

In fairness, ?There was more to the NCAA?s decision than Charlie Mohr?s death,? noted McNally. ?Some schools were giving scholarships and some weren?t. We started to see more and more mismatches.? That?s where boxing can become dangerous.??

?Colleges started dropping their programs, and people weren?t comfortable with boxing in the first place. They associated it with the stereotypes,? said McNally.??

NCBA?s solution was to require that incoming freshmen have no more than 10 amateur bouts, effectively eliminating mismatches. Everyone is a beginner in the NCBA.??

But what stops a full return of NCAA college boxing, only with a system to prevent mismatches? As a USA Boxing official, I can tell you that we do that right now and very carefully. No kid with 30 bouts takes on a beginner ? ever.??

And forget Title IX concerns, the federal legislation mandating gender equality in academic and athletic opportunities. USA women brought home our only boxing hardware from London. Women are gloved up and ready.??

So imagine a young person, coming out of Albany?s Quail Street Gym to compete on Siena College?s Boxing Team, on full scholarship of course, not the $2000/year pittance USA Boxing gives its athletes.

And what if this happened at universities throughout the nation? What a feeder program for Team USA.??

Make no mistake, folks, we?d be back in the medal business. But do we want it? I asked three college athletic directors if they?d be excited about such an eventuality. Nobody answered the question, but simply referred me to NCAA governance procedures.

Pig ash could reveal how people spontaneously combust

Sandrine Ceurstemont, editor, New Scientist TV

Spontaneous human combustion isn't a myth. There are well-documented cases of people suddenly bursting into flames, only to be reduced to a pile of ash half an hour later.

While many scientists have tried to replicate the phenomenon, a recent experiment by biologist Brian J. Ford? is the first to demonstrate a feasible cause. To test his theory that people can explode when there is a build-up of acetone in their body, Ford burned human models made of pork belly marinated in the solvent. The flammable substance can be produced from ketosis, as a result of conditions like alcoholism or low-carbohydrate dieting.

In this video, two miniature dummies burn in about 30 minutes until only their protruding legs are left, a classic hallmark often observed in human victims. Ford thinks the limbs remain unscathed because they contain less fat and so can't absorb as much acetone.

So how likely is it for people with ketosis to explode? For more on this research, read our feature-length article, "Big burn theory: Why humans spontaneously combust".

If you enjoyed this post, see how knitwear can resist superhot flames or watch an explosion simulate the mysterious Buncefield blast.
