Afghanistan beckons India's business leaders to invest

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Afghanistan is "ripe and ready" for Indian investments in mining and other sectors, President Hamid Karzai told business leaders in Mumbai on Saturday at the start of a trip to woo investors for his war-ravaged country.

"We'd like to welcome you with a red carpet, but you need to arrive at the red carpet," he told delegates at an Indian industry event in the financial capital.

"What I'd like to emphasize in particular is that Indian businesses need not be shy when thinking about Afghanistan. The Chinese businesses were there long before you came, five or six years before."

India has invested billions of dollars in Afghanistan since the Taliban regime's ouster in 2001 and has urged private firms to invest there, though many have misgivings about the security climate after 2014, when most foreign troops will leave. China is also looking to tap into Afghanistan's mineral reserves.

A consortium led by state-firm Steel Authority of India last year won the rights to develop a huge iron ore deposit in central Afghanistan and a nearby 6 million metric ton steel plant at a cost of around $11 billion.

China won a huge copper concession not far from Kabul, as well as oil blocks in the north.

However, both Asian giants have been held back in Afghanistan by security concerns as well as poor infrastructure in the landlocked, mountainous country.

India also has to tread carefully in Afghanistan because of the suspicions of arch-rival Pakistan, which sees New Delhi's expanding role in its neighbor as a move to encircle it.

Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma told the meeting with Karzai that New Delhi would look at engaging with Kabul to develop infrastructure such as highways, power projects, Chahbahar port and energy security.

Brooke Burke-Charvet: I Have Thyroid Cancer - iVillage

Brooke Burke-Charvet is going through a health scare, and she's ready to talk about it. The Dancing with the Stars cohost revealed that she's been diagnosed with thyroid cancer in a video posted on her Modern Mom blog on Nov. 8.

"Long story. I got my results back and they were not good," said Burke-Charvet, 41. "I need to have thyroid surgery, a thyroidectomy, which means that I am going to have a nice big scar, right here, across my neck."

She added, however, that her prognosis was hopeful.

"Doctors say that this is a 'good kind of cancer to have.' That sounds so crazy. But my doctor did tell me that this is a happily ever after ending kind of thing."

Burke-Charvet won season 7 of Dancing with the Stars in 2008 and has cohosted the show?s last six seasons with Tom Bergeron. Fighting her cancer, however, will require her to adjust her mindset, Burke-Charvet said.

"I guess the truth is I'm always so used to being in control and taking care of everybody... and now I find myself in this really out of control situation. Here's the way I see it: I'm going to make a positive out of this negative thing. I am going to be a really good patient and I am going to do everything I need to do. I booked my surgery and it's taken me a couple months to really wrap my head around this."

The former DWTS champion has the full support of Bergeron, who has known for a while about Brooke's diagnosis.

"She knows my love and support are with [her]," he said Thursday on The Talk, just hours after Burke-Charvet revealed she will undergo a thyroidectomy. "We're all right there with her."

Bergeron was encouraging about his cohost's diagnosis. "You never want to hear the word 'cancer,' but thyroid cancer is one of the most treatable cancers. It has an incredibly high success rate."

Burke-Charvet married French singer and actor David Charvet in St. Barts in August 2011. The couple have two children, daughter Rain, 5, and son Shaya, 4. Burke has two children from her previous marriage to plastic surgeon Garth Fisher, daughters Neriah, 12, and Sierra, 10.

"Now I'm good and I'm ready to deal with it and I'm going to be fine," the mother of four said. "I feel really, really strong."

Franchising: Which one should you buy? | Kuwait Times

Before buying a franchise, people often tell me they want to buy a ?hot one,? meaning the most popular franchise. But I say, ?That?s the fastest way to get burned!? Eventually, ?hot? franchises turn cold, so beware of buying a franchise just because it?s trendy.

Besides, there are many important questions to ask before you buy a franchise, beginning with: ?Why do I want to buy one?? People who rush into buying franchises often discover it was the worst decision they made. That?s because their expectations and goals were incompatible with franchising, or they bought the wrong business.

Your personal satisfaction
?What will make me happy??
It doesn?t sound like a question serious business investors ask, but it?s a must-answer question before buying a franchise. Some people claim, ?If the franchise makes money, I?ll be happy,? but that?s not always true. What if you discover customers don?t like the product or service you?re selling? Or it?s too costly to keep employees? What if you have to work in the business 18 hours a day? Or you don?t get along with the franchisor? Or you don?t like the customers? How much money will it take to turn your misery into happiness? If you buy the wrong franchise, you may end up closing the business and losing your investment.

Consider time and money
Two of the most critical considerations are your time and money. How much time will you devote to your business? And how much money can you invest? Some franchises require owners to devote long hours, five or more days a week, to establish the business. Will you do that? Or should you look for a business that?s less demanding? Even if there?s no limit to your money, you still need to consider the investment. How much money can you invest? How quickly do you need to break-even and begin earning a profit?

Investment requirements
There are several costs when buying a franchise. You?ll pay a licensing fee, which usually includes training and support, plus additional expenses that may include land, a lease, equipment, inventory, materials, the cost of training employees, and start-up capital. Your total investment to open one franchise may be 20,000 to 50,000 KD. To acquire the master license rights to develop multiple outlets of an established foreign franchise, you may pay an additional 100,000 KD, plus the cost of opening each unit!

By necessity, the type of business you buy may depend on the size of your budget, which makes it all the more important to select a franchise that satisfies your expectations and goals.

Answering these critical questions will help you protect your investment. You can get a list of 92+ Questions To Ask Before You Invest In A Franchise at www.howtobuyafranchise.com. After you answer the key questions, then decide which franchise to buy. You?ll find more about that topic in future editions of this column.

Crazy for God: How I Grew Up as One of the Elect, Helped Found the Religious Right, and Lived to Take All (or Almost All) of It Back

By the time he was nineteen, Frank Schaeffer?s parents, Francis and Edith Schaeffer, had achieved global fame as bestselling evangelical authors and speakers, and Frank had joined his father on the evangelical circuit. He would go on to speak before thousands in arenas around America, publish his own evangelical bestseller, and work with such figures as Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, and Dr. James Dobson. But all the while Schaeffer felt increasingly alienated, precipitating a crisis of faith that would ultimately lead to his departure?even if it meant losing everything. This is the story of an escape from the fundamentalist world and the reasons for Schaeffer?s flight.

Patience With God: Faith for People Who Don?t Like Religion (or Atheism)

Frank Schaeffer has a problem with the New Atheists. He also has a problem with the religious fundamentalists. The problem is that he?doesn?t?see much of a difference between the two camps. Sparing no one and nothing, including himself and his fiery evangelical past, and invoking subtleties too easily ignored by the pontificators, Schaeffer adds much-needed nuance to the existing religious conversation as he challenges atheists and fundamentalists alike.

Sex, Mom, and God: How the Bible?s Strange Take on Sex Led to Crazy Politics?and How I Learned to Love Women (and Jesus) Anyway

A penetrating analysis of political extremism, with a moving and at times hilarious account of growing up in one of the Christian right?s most influential families. Few speakers command Frank Schaeffer?s intimate understanding of right-wing radicalism, and even fewer are able to share their insight as entertainingly and with as much moral weight. this is a lecture about the political extremism that has engulfed politics in America and its consequences.

Thank You for Your Time at DePaul University
From: Scott R. Paeth
To: Frank Schaeffer

Dear Frank,

I wanted to write you to extend my deepest thanks for your recent engagement at
DePaul University. Your conversations with both students and faculty, as well as
your public lecture, were invaluable contributions to the work of DePaul
University, our department of Religious Studies, and the Center for
Interreligious Engagement.

I want to particularly thank you for the time you took to speak to two of my
classes ? Debates About God and The Idea of Evil. I know from talking with
students that many of them were deeply affected by your candid remarks about
your own faith, your history with a particular variation on the Christian theme,
and your continuing struggles to think about issues of life, death, salvation
and grace.

Your evening lecture on the 2012 elections and the origins of the religious
right was also very well received. The feedback that the Center for
Interreligious Engagement received was overwhelmingly positive, and the
participants appreciated the ?on the ground? insights you were able to offer
both as to how the religious right began as a movement as well as how its
effects continue to reverberate in American political life.

Once more, I would like to offer you my deepest and most sincere thanks. I hope
that we may have you back to speak again in the future, and that you continue to
do well in all of your endeavors. I hope to speak to you again soon.

Sincerely,
Scott R. Paeth

FRANK SCHAEFFER is a New York Times bestselling author of more than a dozen books. Frank is a much sought after speaker and has spoken at a wide range of venues from Harvard?s Kennedy School to the Hammer Museum for UCLA, Princeton University, Riverside Church Cathedral, De Paul University, the Kansas City Public Library etc. Frank is a frequent guest on the Rachel Maddow Show on NBC, has appeared on Oprah, been interviewed by Terri Gross on NPR?s ?Fresh Air? and appeared on the ?Today Show? the BBC and other media outlets.

Frank is a survivor of polio and an evangelical/fundamentalist childhood, an acclaimed writer who overcame severe dyslexia, a home-schooled and self-taught documentary movie director, a feature film director and producer of four low budget Hollywood features Frank has described as ?pretty terrible,? and an author of critically acclaimed fiction and nonfiction. Frank?s three semi-biographical novels about growing up in a fundamentalist mission: ?Portofino,? ?Zermatt? and ?Saving Grandma? have a worldwide following and have been translated into nine languages.

Jane Smiley writing in the Washington Post says of Frank?s memoirs ?Crazy For God? and ?Sex, Mom and God?: ?[Schaeffer?s] memoirs have a way of winning a reader?s friendship? Schaeffer is a good memoirist, smart and often laugh-out-loud funny? Frank seems to have been born irreverent, but his memoirs have a serious purpose, and that is to expose the insanity and the corruption of what has become a powerful and frightening force in American politics? Frank has been straightforward and entertaining in his campaign to right the political wrongs he regrets committing in the 1970s and 80s? As someone who has made redemption his work, he has, in fact, shown amazing grace.?

Frank speaks on the impact of religion on politics, his journey from being an Evangelical leader (who hung out with the Bush family, Jack Kemp and other Republican leaders etc., ) to becoming a spokesperson for progressive politics and religion.

Praise for Frank Schaeffer?s Writing:

The Calvin Becker Trilogy (Portofino, Zermatt and Saving Grandma)

?Poignant and hilarious, Calvin is immensely appealing. . . . Schaeffer . . . is very funny, but we are never far from a sense that harshness and violence are real; we are never entirely sure how things will turn out? Calvin, the irrepressibly endearing hero of Frank Schaeffer?s [Calvin Becker Trilogy] is the son of a missionary family, and their trip to Portofino is the highlight of his year. But even in the seductive Italian summer, the Beckers can?t really relax. Calvin?s father could slip into a Bad Mood and start hurling potted plants at any time. His mother has an embarrassing habit of trying to convert ?pagans? on the beach. And his sister Janet has a ski sweater and a miniature Bible in her luggage, just in case the Russians invade and send them to Siberia. His dad says everything is part of God?s plan. But this summer, Calvin has some plans of his own.? ?Richard Eder Los Angeles Times

?The wonderful thing about this book is that it feels like a vacation. . . . And, like any really good vacation, it ends too soon.? ?The Richmond Times-Dispatch

?Beautifully written . . . great insight and unselfconscious humor.?
?Publishers Weekly

?A wry coming of age tale . . . splendid laugh-out loud moments.?
?Kirkus Reviews

?A profound and sometimes painful look at the challenges of practicing faith, and a lot of fun to read.? ?Washington Times

?Calvin Becker is back in a timely, timeless story about the volcanic sexual curiosity of a fourteen-year-old boy born into a fundamentalist family so strict that he has never seen a movie, watched television, or danced (and has to hide his five copies of Mad magazine in the attic). It is 1966, and Ralph and Elsa Becker, Reformed Presbyterian missionaries from Kansas, are stationed in Switzerland, and on a modest ski vacation with their three children: tyrannical eighteen-year-old Janet, angelic Rachael, and our narrator, the irrepressible Calvin. But then, while at the Hotel Riffelberg, high above Zermatt, the fourteen-year-old falls into the hands of a waitress who, while bringing him his breakfast each morning, initiates him into ecstasies he can barely begin to comprehend. Told with warmth and humor.? ?Library Journal

?Mr. Schaeffer?s gifts as a novelist are more than comic: Saving Grandma has a deeper river flowing through it as well, one that is sensual and loving and full of true grace. This is a wonderful book!??Andre Dubus III, author of House of Sand and Fog

Baby Jack (a novel)

?The author lets each character speak in alternating chapters. (In heaven, Jack befriends a down-to-earth God who is a ?wannabe theatre director.?) The reader marvels at how Schaeffer makes this concise chorus of social conviction moving and memorable by emphasizing emotion over description. By no means is Baby Jack another War and Peace. Think War and People instead.? USA Today

The God Trilogy (Crazy for God, Patience With God, Sex, Mom and God)

?But when the family business is religion, it is especially perilous. That is one of the central laments, anyway, of ?Sex, Mom, & God,? a new memoir by Frank Schaeffer. To secular Americans, the name Frank Schaeffer means nothing. But to millions of evangelical Christians, the Schaeffer name is royal, and Frank is the reluctant, wayward, traitorous prince. His crime is not financial profligacy, like some pastors? sons, but turning his back on Christian conservatives.? New York Times

?[Schaeffer's] memoirs have a way of winning a reader?s friendship? Schaeffer is a good memoirist, smart and often laugh-out-loud funny? Frank seems to have been born irreverent, but his memoirs have a serious purpose, and that is to expose the insanity and the corruption of what has become a powerful and frightening force in American politics? Frank has been straightforward and entertaining in his campaign to right the political wrongs he regrets committing in the 1970s and ?80s? As someone who has made redemption his work, he has, in fact, shown amazing grace.? Washington Post, Jane Smiley

?The book[s] shine ? A consummate memoirist, Schaeffer fills the narrative with interesting anecdotes? The sage conversation on a New York-bound bus with a distraught Asian girl is warmly resonant and a befitting conclusion to? [a] book of ruminations, memories and frustrated opinion.? Booklist

?[A] startlingly honest work, which is part memoir and part religious history? Intriguing fare.? Church of England Newspaper

?A work that alternates from heartwarming to thought provoking to laugh out loud funny? Schaeffer brilliantly guides the reader through an exploration of the Bible?s strange, intolerant, and sometimes frightening attitudes about sex, and how these Biblical teachings, through the evangelical grassroots of the Republican Party, have come to dominate the GOP stance? Schaeffer?s writing style combines intelligence, warmth, humor, depth and insight? Sex, Mom, and God is hands down one of the best non-fiction books of the year.? Kirkus Reviews(website)

?A fond and sometimes hilarious look back at [Schaeffer's] mother?s child-rearing methods and the effect they had on him? Schaeffer?s journey demonstrates that the world could be a better place if we were all able to reassess our beliefs and values-to examine them closely and glean only those worth saving.? Library Journal

?Well worth reading, highly entertaining, and very informative about the recent history of American evangelicalism. It will appeal to readers interested in the world today, memoir, or religion.? Huffington Post

?Part memoir, part revelation about Evangelical pathology, and part prescription for theological sanity, the book has much to recommend it.?Patheos.com

?Frequently entertaining.? The Humanist

?Part memoir, part theology, and part political commentary? An ambitious undertaking. But Sex, Mom, and God did not disappoint. Alternating between laugh-out-loud episodes and poignant reflections, Schaeffer recounts with candor the influence his mother had on both his beliefs and the beliefs of a generation of Evangelicals? His readers-believers and non-believers alike-will be challenged to reconsider their views about politics, sex, and religion.? The Daily Beast

?An unusual mix-part memoir, part exegesis on Bible-based belief systems, and part prescription for a more compassionate, human-centered politics for both religious and theologically skeptical people. Humor, at times of the laugh-out-loud variety, is abundant. And while readers will likely bristle at some of Schaeffer?s conclusions, his wit, sass and insights make Sex, Mom, & God a valuable and entertaining look at U.S. fundamentalism.? San Francisco Book Review

What was once a hobby for James Lucas has now turned into work that connects lost family members.

Since entering the field of genealogical research after retirement in 2001, Lucas, 65, has traced more than 32,000 African-Americans within Gonzales, DeWitt, Goliad, Lavaca, Refugio and Victoria counties through genealogy research.

Thursday, Lucas was honored with the Humanitarian Award from the African-American Chamber of Commerce for tracking lost loved ones.

"I'm definitely proud to be recognized for my efforts," Lucas said. "This information isn't out there."

Most of Lucas' records have been made available through the Regional History Center at the Victoria College/University of Houston-Victoria Library.

Special Collections Librarian Sheron Barnes accepted the online database with open arms when Lucas approached her with the idea last fall.

Barnes said tracing a family history may not be the easiest pathway, especially for a race.

"African-Americans have a tough time getting genealogical information," Barnes said. "For (James) to go to these cemeteries personally, as well as visiting funeral homes, that just represents a wealth of information."

Lucas' motivation to conduct the research came from the lack of African-American genealogical information that existed.

After retiring from Union Carbide Corporation at Seadrift, he said he needed something to do.

"When you retire, you want to do something different," said Lucas, who has a degree in industrial education. "I started over."

After talking with his wife, Lucas decided to look into his own family ancestry. Initially looking for history on his father's side, he realized that other families were married into his family, creating a larger family tree than he expected.

"It blew up," said Lucas, jokingly. "I thought it had a limitation."

To get information on individuals, Lucas conducted interviews with families, while also collecting funeral programs. He also went to cemeteries as far as Yoakum, but discovered some headstones didn't exist.

"I don't believe that family history is well known," Lucas said.

Chairman of the African-American Chamber of Commerce of Victoria Matthew Gaskin said Lucas' contribution for the work he had done made it fitting to receive the award.

"I thought he was well-deserving for putting together that information on his own," Gaskin said.

Lucas said he still updates the site, and will continue to do so until he can't anymore.

"My interest is to share information to enlighten people on their forefathers and families," Lucas said.

Las Vegas business owner fired 22 'mostly Hispanic' - The Raw Story

By David Edwards
Thursday, November 8, 2012 9:58 EST

?

A business owner in Las Vegas on Wednesday told a CBS radio station that he had fired 22 of his 114 ?mostly Hispanic? employees because President Barack Obama had won re-election.

?I?ve done my share of educating my employees,? business owner ?David,? who refused to use his real name on air, told KSNT radio host Kevin Wall. ?I never tell them which way to vote. I believe in the free system that we have. I believe in everybody having their right to choose who they want to be president.?

?And I explained that I always put them first and, unfortunately, I?m at a point now ? and am being forced to ? that I have to worry about me and my family now,? he continued. ?I explained to them a month ago, if Obama gets in office, the regulations for Obamacare are going to hurt our business, and I am going to have to make provision to make sure that I have enough money to cover payroll taxes, the additional health care I?m going to have to do. And I explained that to them, and I said, ?You do what you feel you need to do, but I?m just letting you know this as a warning that this is things I have to think of as a business owner.??

David noted that he had ?mostly Hispanic? employees and some had come to work wearing Obama shirts on election day.

?I have to build up that nest egg now for the taxes and regulations that are coming my way,? he explained. ?Elections do have consequences, but so do choices.?

?I don?t need the labor force coming down saying I laid people off because they are Hispanic, I don?t need the headache. We are in a right-to-work state, but I did inform people that I would possibly had to be making layoffs. I did make the notification 30 days ago. I followed the laws.?

Wine and Pets Improve with Age | Canine Chat: Dog Tales and - Blogs

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 7, 2012Are you ready for a mature relationship? Adopt a senior pet at Seattle Humane Society and find out for yourself why senior pets are the best! All month long, adoption fees are waived on cats 7 years and older (normally $25), and dogs 7 years and older are $50 (normally $199-275, training not included).

At some shelters, dogs and cats over the age of three are not considered ?adoptable,? but at the Seattle Humane Society, we know that older pets make amazing companions. Just ask Kaarin, who recently adopted Nicolette, an 11-year-old Australian Shepherd mix. Kaarin is a widow whose dog had passed away. When she saw Nicolette at seattlehumane.org, her heart went out to this senior pup who found herself homeless in her golden years. She decided to adopt Nicolette and give her a loving home. In less than 24 hours, Kaarin wrote to Seattle Humane to say that Nicolette was enjoying naps stretched across her feet, happy to be part of a family.

Top 5 Reasons to Adopt a Mature Pet:

MELLOW PERSONALITY
You know exactly who you are adopting because his or her personality is formed Plus, these great dogs and cats tend to have just the right level of playfulness for busy families.

ALREADY HOUSE-TRAINED
Most mature pets have already learned many of life?s lessons ?including potty lessons!

MAKE THEMSELVES AT HOME
Older companion animals seem to acclimate more quickly to new settings.

HAVE A LOT OF LOVE TO GIVE
Many of our adopters say that senior dogs and cats really seem to appreciate it when they are adopted and bond to their new family more readily than younger ones.

YOU CAN TEACH AN OLD DOG (OR CAT) NEW TRICKS!
With older pets, you don?t have to spend time teaching them all the basics ? they already know them! Instead, have fun teaching them new tricks!

Visit the Seattle Humane Society at 13212 SE Eastgate Way in Bellevue to meet your perfect pet today or see our adoptable pets online at seattlehumane.org.

The Intouchables: Heartwarming Story about Human Relationship ...

Movie: The Intouchables

Director: Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano

Cast: Francois Cluzet, Omar Sy and Audrey Fleurot

Rating: ****

We, human beings, are so full of assumptions, aren?t we? We like to jump to conclusions without even give something good deliberation. For instance, if we happen to meet someone who?s done some prison/jail time, we suddenly consider him/her dangerous. We wouldn?t even want to know why did this person did time at the first place. Or even when you meet someone with some condition, you tend to shower empathy upon him/her than accepting the way he/she is. French-comedy ?The Intouchables?, which is based on a true story, treads the path of human relationships with wit, humor and sentiment.

The lives of Phillip, a multi-billionaire and Driss, a na?ve jail-returned black meet, when the former gets permanently crippled in a paragliding accident, and is on the lookout for full-time nurse. Driss applies, hoping to get rejected and get unemployment benefits, but is found suitable and hired. But, Driss should make it till the end of the month in order to be made permanent. Meanwhile, Driss and Phillip embark on a journey of self-discovery, happiness, friendship and of course, most important of all, power of human relationship.

Generally, stories about inoperable ailments either pave way to boredom or give lot of work to your tear glands. But, ?Intouchables?, which deals with a quadriplegic character, shows us light at the end of the tunnel. The film, which relies strongly on friendship between the principal characters, is not exactly about friendship. One aspect of the film may be friendship, but the other being the thin line of divide between two individuals from extremely different backgrounds.

In one particular scene, Phillip?s friend warns him about Driss, and the time he spent in prison for robbing a jewelry store. To which, Phillip says, it doesn?t matter to him what Driss did in the past. Ideally, anybody would?ve been petrified upon hearing about Driss, and would?ve instantaneously rejected him. But, Phillip only cared to know if Driss was up for the job.

The film explores loneliness from two different perspectives and it?s brilliant. For instance, Driss stays with a family half the size of a soccer team, but hardly talks to them. His mother is most of the time upset with him because he acts irresponsible, while his younger never talks to him as he?s busy peddling drugs. On the contrary, Phillip, doesn?t have a family of his own, but is surrounded every minute by his workers, who seldom speak to him.

Filled with ratty one-liners that will surprise and entertain, jokes in the film are not carefully planted to evoke laughs, but they fit the sardonic circumstances perfectly. In one particular scene, Phillip asks Driss to pass a cookie, to which he says ?no feat, no sweets,? before laughingly passing one.

Francois and Omar were perfect in their respective roles. Although, Phillip may have played a character that barely moved, but he definitely moved with his brilliant performance full of life. Driss, played by Omar, won a Cesar award, a French equivalent to Oscar for his performance.
