Ciriaco triple in 9th leads Red Sox over Yanks 8-6

NEW YORK (AP) ? Boston had wasted a five-run lead by the time Pedro Ciriaco stepped to the plate in the ninth inning Saturday night and hit a hard fly ball toward center field. He thought Curtis Granderson would catch it.

Then Granderson went in on the ball and sprinted back in an attempt to catch up.

"I thought I had a chance," Ciriaco said, "so I run like a hurricane."

The ball landed for a go-ahead triple as Granderson fell, and the Red Sox came away with a dramatic 8-6 win over the New York Yankees after Vicente Padilla allowed a tying, two-run homer in the eighth to nemesis Mark Teixeira.

Adrian Gonzalez had four RBIs for the Red Sox, who built a 6-1 lead for Jon Lester.

"We were good tonight, and we were lucky," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said. "He hit that ball, a knuckleball, 380 feet. It's tough to catch. He's pretty hot right now, so I'd say he was good and we were lucky."

A three-time All-Star, Granderson had expected to make the catch.

"I didn't think it was hit as hard as it was," he said. "And, by the time I tried to get back on it, I couldn't get enough steam to get back to it."

Jacoby Ellsbury's one-out walk off Rafael Soriano (2-1) preceded the hit by Ciriaco, who boosted the lead to two runs when he scored on Dustin Pedroia's sacrifice fly.

Playing designated hitter while David Ortiz is on the disabled list, the 26-year-old Ciriaco had three hits to raise his average to .356 in 59 at-bats. He also had the go-ahead hit in Boston's only other win over the Yankees in eight tries this year, a two-run double off Phil Hughes in the second game of a doubleheader at Fenway Park on July 7.

"He just comes in and plays, has good at-bats, runs the bases well," Valentine said. "Makes us a better team."

It was Granderson's second fielding flub against the Red Sox. In that July 7 game, the Yankees were ahead 3-1 when Granderson called for Daniel Nava's fly ball and allowed it to bounce off his glove as right fielder Darnell McDonald moved past him. Granderson initially was charged with an error, but the official scorer later changed it to McDonald's.

"We haven't seen much of that, him getting turned around like that," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "But it just shows that it's part of the game and sometimes players are going to have the wrong read on balls. It's going to happen in the course of the season, and it won't be the last one, I'm sure."

Andrew Miller (3-1) got one out for the win, and Alfredo Aceves finished for his 22nd save in 26 chances.

New York started to erase its early deficit in the fifth, when Jayson Nix hit a two-run homer and Derek Jeter had an RBI grounder. Then came another matchup of Padilla and Teixeira, who have been jawing at each other from a distance.

Padilla allowed a leadoff single to pinch-hitter Raul Ibanez in the eighth, then threw a called third strike past Jeter. Granderson hit two foul drives deep down the right-field line, the second missing a home run by about a foot, before striking out.

Padilla fell behind 2-0 in the count to Teixeira, then lobbed in a 51 mph curveball for a called strike. Teixeira turned on the next pitch, sending it deep into the right-field bleachers. He stared at the ball as he took four short steps up the line, then went into his home run trot.

Padilla wouldn't discuss anything with media. As reporters approached him in the locker room, he said: "About what? One bad day?" turned and walked out.

Teixeira hit a go-ahead, two-run triple off Padilla in the seventh inning at Fenway Park on July 6, sparking a weekend war of words. Padilla accused Teixeira of wronging Latino teammates when they played together on the Texas Rangers in 2006-07, and Teixeira said Padilla threw at hitters and "didn't have a lot of friends in the game." Padilla responded Teixeira would "be better off playing a women's sport."

Teixeira said he's been trying to put the tiff behind.

"Emotion is part of the game, but if you let the emotions get the best of you, especially as a hitter, you swing too hard or you swing at pitches over your head, that does you no good," he said.

Following a rain delay of 2 hours, 4 minutes, Gonzalez hit an RBI double and scored on Will Middlebrook's two-run double in the first, then hit a three-run homer off CC Sabathia in the fifth.

Chris Stewart's first home run since September cut the gap to 3-1 in the third, but Gonzalez boosted the lead with two outs in the fifth when he lined a home run into the right-field bleachers. Gonzalez leads the majors in batting average with runners in scoring position at .418 (41 for 98).

New Yankees right fielder Ichiro Suzuki raced into the right-center gap to rob Gonzalez of an extra-base hit with a catch just in front of the warning track in the seventh.

Lester, who had been 0-3 with a 10.42 ERA in his previous four starts, allowed four runs and four hits in six innings and watched his bullpen blow a lead he left with for the fifth time. He fanned Robinson Cano in the sixth for his 1,000th strikeout.

"We needed to win that game," Lester said. "Guys came back and kept fighting. That was big for us."

NOTES: Valentine caused a stir before the game when he said the Red Sox medical staff instructed him not to play LF Carl Crawford four days in a row, a mandate Valentine said he ignored earlier in the month after the left fielder came off the DL. ... Former Red Sox manager Terry Francona visited with Boston players before the game in the Red Sox clubhouse, preparing for his job as a broadcaster for Sunday night's game on ESPN. ... Sabathia gave up a season-high six runs and eight hits in six innings.

New research confirms efficacy of transcranial magnetic stimulation for depression

New research confirms efficacy of transcranial magnetic stimulation for depression

Friday, July 27, 2012

In one of the first studies to look at transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in real-world clinical practice settings, researchers at Butler Hospital, along with colleagues across the U.S., confirmed that TMS is an effective treatment for patients with depression who are unable to find symptom relief through antidepressant medications. The study findings are published online in the June 11, 2012 edition of Depression and Anxiety in the Wiley Online Library.

Previous analysis of the efficacy of TMS has been provided through more than 30 published trials, yielding generally consistent results supporting the use of TMS to treat depression when medications aren't sufficient. "Those previous studies were key in laying the groundwork for the FDA to approve the first device for delivery of TMS as a treatment for depression in 2008," said Linda Carpenter, MD, lead author of the report and chief of the Mood Disorders Program and the Neuromodulation Clinic at Butler Hospital. "Naturalistic studies like ours, which provide scrutiny of real-life patient outcomes when TMS therapy is given in actual clinical practice settings, are the next step in further understanding the effectiveness of TMS. They are also important for informing healthcare policy, particularly in an era when difficult decisions must be made about allocation of scarce resources."

Carpenter explains that naturalistic studies differ from controlled clinical trials because they permit the inclusion of subjects with a wider range of symptomatology and comorbidity, whereas controlled clinical trials typically have more rigid criteria for inclusion. "As a multisite study collecting naturalistic outcomes from patients in clinics in various regions in the U.S., we were also able to capture effects that might arise from introducing a novel psychiatric treatment modality like TMS in non-research settings," said Carpenter. In all, the study confirms how well TMS works in diverse settings where TMS is administered to a real-life population of patients with depression that have not found relief through many other available treatments.

The published report summarized data collected from 42 clinical TMS practice sites in the US, and included outcomes from 307 patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) who had persistent symptoms despite the use of antidepressant medication. Change during TMS was assessed using both clinicians' ratings of overall depression severity and scores on patient self-report depression scales, which require the patient to rate the severity of each symptom on the same standardized scale at the end of each 2-week period. Rates for "response" and "remission" to TMS were calculated based on the same cut-off scores and conventions used for other clinical trials of antidepressant treatments. Fifty-eight percent positive response rate to TMS and 37 percent remission rate were observed.

"The patient outcomes we found in this study demonstrated a response rate similar to controlled clinical trial populations," said Dr. Carpenter, explaining that this new data validates TMS efficacy in treating depression for those who have failed to benefit from antidepressant medications. "Continued research and confirmation of the effectiveness of TMS is important for understanding its place in everyday psychiatric care and to support advocacy for insurance coverage of the treatment." Thanks in part to the advocacy efforts of Dr. Carpenter, TMS was recently approved for coverage by Medicare in New England, and it is also now covered by BCBSRI. "Next steps for TMS research involve enhancing our understanding of how to maintain positive response to TMS over time after the course of therapy ends and learning how to customize the treatment for patients using newer technologies, so TMS can help even more patients."

Lawyers for disabled China activist appeal conviction

Lawyers for disabled Chinese rights defender Ni Yulan on Friday went to court to challenge convictions for fraud and "picking quarrels", for which she is serving a 32-month jail sentence.

Ni, 52, has been confined to a wheelchair since an earlier stint in jail. She was found guilty this year of fraud and "picking quarrels" -- charges her lawyers and supporters say were trumped up to silence her.

The activist, whose husband Dong Jiqin was also convicted on the latter charge, spent much of the trial lying on a bed in the courtroom due to her poor health and needed a respirator to breathe.

There was a heavy police presence outside the court in Beijing as the hearing got under way Friday.

It was not immediately clear whether the couple or their daughter Dong Xuan, who was placed under effective house arrest after the original hearing earlier this year, were able to attend.

The couple's lawyer Cheng Hai told AFP before the appeal hearing that he had witness statements from the alleged fraud victims to support the legal challenge.

"They have not only provided written testimonies that they donated the funds voluntarily and were not defrauded (but also) video recordings," Cheng said.

Trained as a lawyer, Ni began providing legal aid to residents facing home demolitions after her own courtyard home in central Beijing was requisitioned in 2001.

The next year she was sentenced to one year in jail for "obstructing official business" and disbarred as a lawyer.

After her release she was confined to a wheelchair, which the rights group Amnesty International blamed on abuse while in prison.

In 2008, Ni and her husband began living on the street after their home was demolished, and Ni received another jail sentence of two years for "harming public property".

After a brief period of freedom in 2010, police relocated her and her husband to a hotel and later requested them to pay the 69,000 yuan ($11,000) bill, which they refused to do.

In April last year she and her husband were detained again as part of a roundup of activists amid calls for protests akin to the Arab Spring popular revolts that erupted across the Middle East.

Her sentencing in April this year sparked an international outcry, and the United States and European Union have both called for her release.

On the prowl for insight into economists

The folks over at The Daily Reckoning are on a mission. Their treasure? Insight. Insight into why it is that the smartest economists in the world are so stupid. Incidentally, they hope to understand why the GDP is such a fraudulent measure of prosperity

By Bill Bonner,?Guest blogger / July 21, 2012

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke appears before the House Financial Services Committee to deliver his twice-a-year report to Congress on the state of the economy, in this July 2012 file photo. Bill Bonner would like to know whether Bernanke really thinks he, personally, can improve the wealth and well-being of the world?s people by tinkering with his interest rates and bank policies.

Yes, dear reader, we are working on a new book. And to save time and effort, we?re working on it right here in the pages of the?Daily Reckoning.

With political journalist Lila Rajiva, he wrote his third New York Times best-selling book, Mobs, Messiahs and Markets, which offers concrete advice on how to avoid the public spectacle of modern finance. What?s it about? Well, you might think that a writer has an idea? You might think he knows where he is going. Then, he sits down to write it. And that is certainly part of the story. But often the idea is more of an intuition?a vague feeling?a hint that there is some place where it is worth going, in hope of finding treasure. Where? What treasure, exactly? Often, the author doesn?t know.

The treasure we?re looking for is insight. We?re trying to understand why it is that the smartest economists in the world are so stupid.  Incidentally, we hope to understand why GDP is a fraudulent measure of prosperity?and why central banking is a failure?and why the governments of the developed countries are doomed.

There is one simple idea that explains all of this?an idea that is both intuitively self-evident?and demonstrably unrelenting. But we?ll come to it in good time?let?s get back to economists:

Does Ben Bernanke really think he, personally, can improve the wealth and well-being of the world?s people by tinkering with his interest rates and bank policies? Apparently so?

Do Stiglitz, Krugman et al really think they can help the debt-soaked economy to grow by giving it more debt at a cheaper rate? Yes?that?s what they say?

Does Jeffrey Sachs actually believe that he and other smart economists can develop a strategy for the entire world economy? That?s the way it looks?

Yesterday, we took up the role of numbers. The greater the precision, we asserted, the greater the lie. Why? Because these economists really don?t know anything for certain. The best they can do is observe?guess?and hedge their bets with a ?maybe? or a ?possibly.? The more precisely they claim to know something for sure?the greater the distance between what they can actually know and what they claim.

But numbers are to an economist what make-up is to an aging starlet?put on enough of it and maybe the folks won?t see the truth.

Behind every number is a wrinkle? Small numbers hide small ones. Big numbers hide bigger ones. A big number, such as the unemployment rate, has a whole army of other numbers behind it. There are the statistical adjustments?seasonal adjustments?and enough arbitrary definitions to make a corpse look good.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that 8.2% of the workforce is unemployed. Simple enough. But what does it mean? What?s the ?workforce?? And what does it mean to be ??unemployed?? Think of all those people who work for cash?like the Latinos you pick up at gas stations for day work. Are they unemployed? How about the guy who couldn?t find a job, so he went back to school? Is he unemployed? What about the housewife who would like to find a job?sort of?but isn?t actively looking for one? Are these people part of the workforce?

Breast cancer survivors thrive at SK Sanctuary events | La Jolla Light

By Marti Gacioch

Many women use spa services to gain the powerful benefits of relaxation and healing that such a visit can bring. And perhaps no woman can benefit more from such pampering than a breast cancer survivor. With that thought in mind, La Jolla plastic surgeon, Dr. Stephen M. Krant, M.D., F.A.C. and his wife, Lyn Krant, owners of La Jolla?s SK Sanctuary, open their 7,000 square foot spa every other month to 35 breast cancer survivors for a complimentary evening of spa services.

SK Sanctuary Luau Hula at SK Institute breast cancer night.

?Lyn and I started these survivor nights in 2001 with 13 of my breast cancer reconstructive patients,? Dr. Krant said. ?I had always wanted to do a support group for my patients, so once we opened SK Sanctuary, it was the perfect venue.?

Survivor Night begins with the attendees slipping into SK spa robes before sampling food and drink as they mix with other survivors and share experiences. Each woman can choose from a selection of services, including a facial, hair styling, makeup, pedicure, and manicure or manual lymphatic drainage.

?Each woman must have a letter from her physician before receiving services, and the women walk out feeling pampered and good about themselves,? Dr. Krant said. ?It?s truly a night of nurturing for them.?

The Krant?s initial effort has evolved into their non-profit SK Institute that focuses on education and support, and helps fund the Survivor Nights. So far, they?ve treated 3,500 breast cancer survivors and different groups to spa night, and this October they?ll treat 35 women from the Young Survivors Coalition.

?All of them are under age 40 and it is mind boggling to see a woman walking around with her wig on, and then 20 minutes later see her walking around bald because she has the courage and the security because she?s surrounded by her peer group and now she feels comfortable,? Dr. Krant said.

Survivor Night often features guest speakers, including radio and TV personalities, research scientists, oncologists and breast cancer survivors, such as Mattie Mills, lead singer of The Heroes. Entertainment has included belly dancers, Tibetan drummers, line dancing and a hula luau.

While Survivor Night is fully booked for the July 31 event, breast cancer survivors can still sign up for the September evening at (858) 459-2400.

To contribute to Survivor Night, call the SK Institute at (858) 459-3334 or visit www.skinstitute.org or write info@skinstitute.org

INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR, TERRY RICHARD BAZES - Book Blogs

INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR OF, "LIZARD WORLD" TERRY RICHARD BAZES

?

Hello Terry, thank you so much for agreeing to do this interview. It is a pleasure to have the chance to get to know more about you and your writing. First tell us about your newest novel and why you decided to write it.?

Lizard World is ? in a nutshell -- the black comic history of a brain transplant: some Florida yokels kidnap a dentist named Max Smedlow, scoop out his brain and transplant it into the body of an evil and still-surviving 17th-century English Lord. As you can see, this is certainly a horror story. But it is also a protracted joke. After they?ve been surgically connected, the dentist and the lord alternate like Jekyll and Hyde: whenever the dentist?s brain tries to take control of the decrepit body and return to his life filling cavities in suburban New Jersey, the ancient lord interrupts him with three-hundred-year-old memories of his depraved youth when he debauched maidens, ate beggars, schemed to steal a dukedom and underwent excruciating operations that engrafted stolen body parts and cut out his growths of reptilian flesh.

Why did I decide to write this? That is a difficult question ? and I can think of two very different ways of answering it. On the one hand, I can speak about the very slow, intuitive process I went through in order to come up with this particular story. But, on the other hand, I can speak about why I wanted ? in the first place -- to find a story that is both horrible and very funny. And it is this second way of answering your question that seems to lead into deeper waters. For the idea of writing a comic-Gothic novel was born long before I slowly discovered the plot that this comedic horror tale would have.

I think the need to write a story that is both horrible and funny stems from the fact that I think this kind of story is my most sincere expression of how I see life. I am a voice-driven writer ? which is to say that I discover my characters through the way they speak ? and a black-comic plot releases these voices.

Tell us about some of your hobbies, things you like to do in your spare time.?

The only hobby I have now is oil painting. I?m not a very good painter and that?s probably why I like painting so much ? and why it?s so good for me. It allows me to be playful while at the same time (since I know I?ll never be Monet or Cezanne) it frees me from the perfectionism that sometimes afflicts me when I sit down to write. Painting a picture, like writing a novel, is about creating a world. It reminds me that I shouldn?t hesitate to make a cloud or rub one out and, through my very incompetence, that it?s okay to make a mess of things. Although I don?t paint often, I always wonder (when I do paint) why I don?t paint more; for I lose all sense of time ? and, after I finally put my brush down, the canvas always draws me back again like a magnet.

What is the one most rewarding thing in your life right now?

The most rewarding thing in my life? That?s easy: the people I love.

When reading for pleasure do you tend to stick to the same genre you write or do you like to read other genres as well?

Although Lizard World is a black-comic horror novel and so ? sort of ? belongs to the horror genre, I don?t think it should be shelved next to The Shining or Dracula. Instead I hope it might be placed next to other darkly comic fictions ? and these are the kinds of books I mostly read. The modern masters of the comedic voice whom I like most are Nabokov, Thomas Berger, Evelyn Waugh, Aldous Huxley, John Barth, Thomas Pynchon and Martin Amis. Thomas Berger, for example, has written in many different genres ? the whodunit, the western, the spy story etc. ? but it is the comic voice that is the constant. But I do also have a longstanding fascination with the gory delights and nightmarish characters of the Gothic novel and have read most of the masterpieces. I particularly like books that, like Lizard World, fuse the comic and the gothic ? like Patrick McGrath?s The Grotesque, for example.

But I also read entirely different kinds of novels. At least once a year I read a Simenon mystery in French and right now I?m reading Ian Fleming.

I like Tolkien?s and Neil Gaiman?s fantasies and William Gibson?s and Neal Stephenson?s science fiction. All of this reading is certainly always for pleasure, but it?s also always equally for business. That?s because I remain on the lookout for anything that will suggest possibilities for writing a scene or structuring a drama.

When was it that you realized writing was what you wanted to do with your life?

When I was sixteen I became obsessed with writing papers for my English class. I spent hours and hours, sitting at my desk in my room, writing in longhand on a lined pad of yellow paper. I remember how I was always revising, changing words, adding phrases, experimenting with the order of my sentences and ? not with a computer but literally ? cutting and pasting with scissors and scotch tape. I remember one day realizing that I would always be doing this.

When can we expect your next book out and can you give us a sneak peek?

I?ve been working with a brilliant illustrator ? named Lou Netter ? on a graphic novel version of Lizard World. So that?s the next book in the works, although I can?t say exactly when it we?ll set the monster loose. I?m also in the very earliest stages of planning another novel ? and so I have some sketches of a plot, some embryonic characters and some passages of polished prose. But it is much too soon for me to know what it will be and certainly much too soon for me to speak of it. That?s not because I want to be ungenerously secretive, but because my first creative writing teacher told me that it?s ?bad luck? for a writer to talk about a work-in-progress ? and because I?ve come to see the wisdom of that advice. The point is that speaking about a book before it?s had a chance to germinate is like prematurely letting the steam out a pressure cooker. Uncooked ideas have to stay inside the imagination, safe from either the approval or the disapproval of the outside world. Because approval or disapproval can be equally injurious, interfering with judgments and choices that require the clarity of solitude.

Back in your high school career, who was the one teacher you would say made a profound difference in your life, if any?

Yes there was. His name was Robert Cullen and he was, for me at least, the ?catcher in the rye.? Holden Caufield explains that phrase when he says that he?d imagined children playing on a field of rye ? and a grown man standing on the edge, ready to catch anyone about to fall over. Cullen was, I think, the only person I?ve ever known who was enlightened ? in the Zen Buddhist sense of the word. So when I, so to speak, stubbed my toe on the infinite, he was the one who helped me understand. It was because he suggested it that I spent years studying the poetry of William Blake. Cullen almost always wore sunglasses, but when he took them off and looked at you, he had eyes like blue laser beams.

What dreams do you have for future generations that you'd like to share with others?

I am much more drawn to the past than to the future and so I can?t say that I find myself thinking very much about future generations. But if I did dream about future generations, I feel pretty sure that those dreams would be nightmares. I don?t see things getting a whole lot better and think the world to come will much more likely be a dystopia than a utopia. I hope that my sons and their families (if they have them) will grow their own food and establish a self-sufficient sanctuary in the countryside as far as possible from the ugliness and contagion of the larger society. I once was on the coast of northwest Ireland where I was told that, on an island not from there, monks devoted themselves to transcribing the Bible during the dark ages. I think civilized people in the future will have to do pretty much the same thing ? keep the candle burning in the night.

One off the board question I like to ask, is what are your views as far as 2012, and do you believe in the Mayan Calendar??

National Geographic recently reported that a cave has been discovered in an ancient Mayan city ? and that the walls of the cave are covered with paintings, one of which is a calendar that extends the future for at least another 7000 years.

So it seems that even the Mayans didn?t think that the world was going to end in 2012. I think they were probably right.

Finally, do you have any advice you'd like to give to other aspiring authors, also please leave us your links where we can find out more about you.

The advice I?d most like to give to other writers is that they should write for the love of writing itself and not for any other imagined and extraneous benefit.

In other words, don?t write because you think it?s going to make you rich or famous ? or even noticed at all, for that matter. The greatest joy I?ve gotten from writing came to me on those splendid and rare days when, in complete solitude, I had written pages that entirely pleased me. This bliss was sufficient unto itself and didn?t require anyone else?s attention or applause. Above all, trust yourself, your own sense of taste ? and if it tastes good to you, it is.

If you?d like to know more about me, go to my website:?http://terryrichardbazes.com/?I?d be delighted to have you visit.

Thank you again Terry for the ability to do this interview with you. Perhaps we can do more together in the near future.

CSN: Theo, Cubs to be big player on trade market

Less than two weeks remain until the July 31 trade deadline, and this is where Theo Epstein will earn his money. The Cubs president could shape pennant races in both leagues, and infuse the system with the ?impact talent? his front office is always talking about.

The first question is whether Ryan Dempster will make it to his next scheduled start ? Friday against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. From there, seismic changes could hit this team.

Epstein said he has ?no idea? just how many players could be in play.

?We have to assess every situation,? Epstein said Wednesday at Wrigley Field. ?If there are moves we can make that put us in a better situation going forward, we?ll make ?em. But we?re not going to make moves just for the sake of making moves. They have to leave us in a better position for the future.?

An industry source projected the Cubs could get two solid (maybe not spectacular) prospects for Dempster, who has a 1.86 ERA and has thrown 33 consecutive scoreless innings (with a trip to the disabled list for a sore lat muscle in between).

An opportunity with the Los Angeles Dodgers is said to appeal to Dempster, who?s positioned to become a free agent at season?s end. He has no-trade rights ? which shouldn?t prevent a deal ? and any contender already knows the hard competitive edge and leadership skills he?d bring into a clubhouse.

The extra wild cards have widened the playoff field, leaving the Cubs as one of the few teams that have already sharped their focus for July 31.

Would-be contenders like the Miami Marlins, Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers are stuck in the middle, still trying to figure out their strategy. The New York Yankees are the only team that really appears to be pulling away in their division, and they play in the brutal American League East.?? ?

?It?s always good to have the market dynamic on your side, more buyers than sellers,? Epstein said. ?It?s always nice to have leverage on your side. ? We?ll see. The trade market?s still developing. As you get closer to the deadline, teams? real desires and intensity of those wishes become clear.?

That?s the picture one major-league official painted for how and when the Cubs might deal Matt Garza. An overly aggressive owner, a desperate general manager or a game-changing injury could force someone to meet the asking price. There?s no rush or obligation to trade Garza, who remains under club control through 2013.

Even with Dempster and Garza, the Cubs are facing a pitching deficit. It compelled them to take seven consecutive pitchers in the June draft after using the No. 6 overall pick on high school outfielder Albert Almora. Thirteen of their top 20 selections were pitchers. ?

?In certain deals, I think it is (what we?re looking for),? Epstein said. ?You can express a preference for pitching. But if you?re dealing with a club that has better position-player prospects ? or you feel position players in a certain system are a safer bet or offer higher upside ? I don?t think it?s smart to pigeonhole yourself to one situation.

?As a whole ? not specifically regarding these potential deals that are upcoming ? we need to add a lot of pitching to the system. It?s not enough to have like a handful or one or two. You need to have waves and waves of pitching coming through your system, and we don?t have that. We hardly even have one wave coming. So we need to build a lot of pitching depth.?

UConn loses final postseason appeal, but Jim Calhoun to coach through ban

Published Saturday, Jul 14, 2012 at 12:09 pm EDT Last updated 6 hours and 52 minutes ago

The somewhat murky future of Connecticut basketball has been cleared up. The Huskies will not play in the 2013 NCAA Tournament, but at least coach Jim Calhoun pledges to be around to see the Huskies through the lean years.

UConn?s final appeal to the NCAA -- to allow the Huskies to play in postseason despite its poor academic track record -- was rejected Friday. On the same day, Calhoun, who has long been evasive about when he?d retire, promised to coach at least two more seasons.

NCAA Committee on Academic Performance chairman Walt Harrison said in a statement that the group has decided not to adjust its formula for 2013 postseason eligibility. That was UConn?s final hope.

"It'll certainly be different this year," Calhoun told CBS Sports. "But there are a whole bunch of schools that aren't going to make the NCAA Tournament and will still play hard."

And Calhoun, who turned 70 in May, will be there to coach them. That?s assuming good health, of course. He missed 26 games in his career, including eight games last season, to deal with a variety of health issues, from prostate surgery to pneumonia, dehydration, stress and back surgery.

"I feel good. ... My contract is for two more years," Calhoun said. "I still think we have chance to be pretty good this season."

The Huskies, coming off a NCAA championship in 2011, struggled mightily last season. The team finished 20-14, losing to Iowa State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. And since the announcement of the 2013 postseason ban, guard Jeremy Lamb and center Andre Drummond left early for the NBA and center Alex Oriakhi (Missouri) and forwards Roscoe Smith (UNLV) and Michael Bradley (junior college) all transferred.

It?ll be a different UConn club next season but not one devoid of talent.

Shabazz Napier and Ryan Boatright will give Calhoun a pair of lightning fast guards to push the tempo. Holy Cross transfer R.J. Evans and incoming freshman Omar Calhoun should provide scoring off the wing. Forwards DeAndre Daniels and Tyler Olander are expected to improve and give the club scoring inside. The development of 7-foot German Enosch Wolf, who has lost weight this summer, could be the key, Calhoun said.
