CSN: Theo, Cubs to be big player on trade market

Less than two weeks remain until the July 31 trade deadline, and this is where Theo Epstein will earn his money. The Cubs president could shape pennant races in both leagues, and infuse the system with the ?impact talent? his front office is always talking about.

The first question is whether Ryan Dempster will make it to his next scheduled start ? Friday against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. From there, seismic changes could hit this team.

Epstein said he has ?no idea? just how many players could be in play.

?We have to assess every situation,? Epstein said Wednesday at Wrigley Field. ?If there are moves we can make that put us in a better situation going forward, we?ll make ?em. But we?re not going to make moves just for the sake of making moves. They have to leave us in a better position for the future.?

An industry source projected the Cubs could get two solid (maybe not spectacular) prospects for Dempster, who has a 1.86 ERA and has thrown 33 consecutive scoreless innings (with a trip to the disabled list for a sore lat muscle in between).

An opportunity with the Los Angeles Dodgers is said to appeal to Dempster, who?s positioned to become a free agent at season?s end. He has no-trade rights ? which shouldn?t prevent a deal ? and any contender already knows the hard competitive edge and leadership skills he?d bring into a clubhouse.

The extra wild cards have widened the playoff field, leaving the Cubs as one of the few teams that have already sharped their focus for July 31.

Would-be contenders like the Miami Marlins, Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers are stuck in the middle, still trying to figure out their strategy. The New York Yankees are the only team that really appears to be pulling away in their division, and they play in the brutal American League East.?? ?

?It?s always good to have the market dynamic on your side, more buyers than sellers,? Epstein said. ?It?s always nice to have leverage on your side. ? We?ll see. The trade market?s still developing. As you get closer to the deadline, teams? real desires and intensity of those wishes become clear.?

That?s the picture one major-league official painted for how and when the Cubs might deal Matt Garza. An overly aggressive owner, a desperate general manager or a game-changing injury could force someone to meet the asking price. There?s no rush or obligation to trade Garza, who remains under club control through 2013.

Even with Dempster and Garza, the Cubs are facing a pitching deficit. It compelled them to take seven consecutive pitchers in the June draft after using the No. 6 overall pick on high school outfielder Albert Almora. Thirteen of their top 20 selections were pitchers. ?

?In certain deals, I think it is (what we?re looking for),? Epstein said. ?You can express a preference for pitching. But if you?re dealing with a club that has better position-player prospects ? or you feel position players in a certain system are a safer bet or offer higher upside ? I don?t think it?s smart to pigeonhole yourself to one situation.

?As a whole ? not specifically regarding these potential deals that are upcoming ? we need to add a lot of pitching to the system. It?s not enough to have like a handful or one or two. You need to have waves and waves of pitching coming through your system, and we don?t have that. We hardly even have one wave coming. So we need to build a lot of pitching depth.?

UConn loses final postseason appeal, but Jim Calhoun to coach through ban

The somewhat murky future of Connecticut basketball has been cleared up. The Huskies will not play in the 2013 NCAA Tournament, but at least coach Jim Calhoun pledges to be around to see the Huskies through the lean years.

UConn?s final appeal to the NCAA -- to allow the Huskies to play in postseason despite its poor academic track record -- was rejected Friday. On the same day, Calhoun, who has long been evasive about when he?d retire, promised to coach at least two more seasons.

NCAA Committee on Academic Performance chairman Walt Harrison said in a statement that the group has decided not to adjust its formula for 2013 postseason eligibility. That was UConn?s final hope.

"It'll certainly be different this year," Calhoun told CBS Sports. "But there are a whole bunch of schools that aren't going to make the NCAA Tournament and will still play hard."

And Calhoun, who turned 70 in May, will be there to coach them. That?s assuming good health, of course. He missed 26 games in his career, including eight games last season, to deal with a variety of health issues, from prostate surgery to pneumonia, dehydration, stress and back surgery.

"I feel good. ... My contract is for two more years," Calhoun said. "I still think we have chance to be pretty good this season."

The Huskies, coming off a NCAA championship in 2011, struggled mightily last season. The team finished 20-14, losing to Iowa State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. And since the announcement of the 2013 postseason ban, guard Jeremy Lamb and center Andre Drummond left early for the NBA and center Alex Oriakhi (Missouri) and forwards Roscoe Smith (UNLV) and Michael Bradley (junior college) all transferred.

It?ll be a different UConn club next season but not one devoid of talent.

Shabazz Napier and Ryan Boatright will give Calhoun a pair of lightning fast guards to push the tempo. Holy Cross transfer R.J. Evans and incoming freshman Omar Calhoun should provide scoring off the wing. Forwards DeAndre Daniels and Tyler Olander are expected to improve and give the club scoring inside. The development of 7-foot German Enosch Wolf, who has lost weight this summer, could be the key, Calhoun said.

Warming indicted for extreme weather

Climate change can explain some 2011 departures from the norm

Texans sweltered through the hottest, driest spring and summer on record last year. Much of the blame can be attributed to a recurring climate pattern known as La Ni?a, which emerges every few years as surface waters chill in the eastern equatorial Pacific. But Earth?s steadily warming climate contributed as well, a new analysis concludes.

Since the 1960s, the likelihood of Texas seeing extremely hot, dry weather in a La Ni?a year has mushroomed 20-fold due to human-induced global warming, David Rupp of Oregon State University in Corvallis and his colleagues calculate.

They were among six international teams probing climate?s link to extreme events in late 2010 through 2011. The collected findings appear in the July Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society.

Severe food shortages, in places causing famine, gripped the Horn of Africa last year after drought left the land parched from winter 2010 through the following spring. La Ni?a played a role there, too. However, computer analyses of global climate conditions since 1979 find that a recent warming of surface waters in the Indian and Pacific Oceans can destabilize La Ni?a weather patterns. Chris Funk of the U.S. Geological Survey in Santa Barbara, Calif., concludes that these probably intensified 2011?s drought in East Africa.

Other teams pointed to global warming as a likely contributor to excessive heat in central Europe last summer and to unusually balmy temperatures in central England in November 2010. In the British case, that kind of heat could be expected to recur every 20 years now ? a 62-fold increase over the 1960s.

Yet global warming can?t be blamed for all monster weather. Unprecedented flooding that submerged large tracts of northern Thailand, including its capital, for up to two months last year resulted from rainfall intensity the region had encountered before. But water management practices and heavy industrialization of a flood plain slowed drainage last year.

?These new analyses are pioneering efforts to get near real-time assessments of climate?s role in extreme weather events, says climatologist Thomas Peterson of the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C.

For years, he says, climate scientists have argued that although global warming can increase the frequency of extreme weather, they couldn?t pin any particular event on human-caused climate change. That appears to be changing, Peterson and his colleagues argue in their introduction to the new report.

Using the developing field of ?attribution science,? researchers are beginning to apply massive computing capacity to explore how global temperatures, reflectivity and moisture patterns can affect the odds of localized extreme weather events.

In 2011, droughts beyond Africa and Texas brought billions of dollars in crop losses, says Jessica Blunden of the National Climatic Data Center. The North Atlantic saw above-average hurricane activity (19 named storms, well over the long-term average of 12), and seven separate U.S. tornado outbreaks each wreaked more than $1 billion in damage.

Polar regions racked up their own extremes, says Martin Jeffries of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, another report editor. Barrow, Alaska, sustained a record 86 consecutive days when the minimum air temperature failed to dip below freezing.

Understanding global warming?s role in extreme events extends well beyond blaming rights. Peterson notes that water managers may need to change policies if evidence begins pointing to persistent changes in the recurrence rates and lengths of droughts or the frequency of heavy rains. Right now, linking these events is difficult, usually works only for events lasting longer than a month, and takes a year to complete. Peterson?s team hopes to see the science mature to the point that assessments might be turned around more quickly and tackle events lasting mere days.
