Legalization of Marijuana

I'm wondering why we haven't legalized marijuana yet. 50,000 people per year die from alcohol poisoning and 400,000 die from tobacco. These two commonly used drugs are legal. While marijuana unarguably impairs performance, researchers suggest it's less harmful than alcohol. I think anybody that's been exclusively drunk and/or exclusively high will understand this argument. Yes there are over one thousand harmful chemicals in marijuana but that is a very misleading fact. In the August 1990 issue of Science magazine it was exposed that there is over 800 volatile chemicals in roasted coffee. Only 21 one of these chemicals have been tested and 16 of them have been known to cause cancer in rodents. Yet coffee remains legal and is still considered fairly safe. Shouldn't it be up to the people to decide how they want to treat their health? No one has proved a solid link between marijuana and heroine but many argue that many people who smoke marijuana graduate to harder drugs. You can establish a correlation between drinking expresso and becoming a heroine addict but that doesn't mean that drinking expresso inexorably leads to becoming addicted to heroine. It should be noted that in Jamaica where the per capita use is really high, it's just because it's a part of society and it's culturally accepted, there is absolutely no correlation or incidents between the two. That suggests that this might only happen because we put a societal taboo around it. I also think that heroine addicts are a completely different breed from the midnight tokers, the overall substance rates pale in consumption. There are a plethora of reasons why marijuana should be legal anyway. The most obvious of these is liberty. In my opinion people deserve the freedom to choose wether or not they want to use marijuana, from a philosophical point of view individuals should have the right to make choices for themselves. The government can only interfere if it poses a threat to the individual or endangers someone else and in this case it isn't a logical argument because marijuana does neither. Marijuana is far less dangerous than things like alcohol and tobacco and the government allows that to be legal, if you want to take that point of view you have to make alcohol and tobacco illegal too. Secondly is the cost. Keeping marijuana illegal is EXPENSIVE. We spend billions of dollars every year chasing peaceful people who happen to like to get high. We have to pay for their housing, healthcare, attorney fees, food, court costs, it gets really costly. Instead of wasting money on locking people up we could be using the money for different things. Plus if marijuana were legal government could pose taxes on marijuana like they do on alcohol and cigarettes, and we will be able to put that money towards good causes like drug education programs. Despite the fact that marijuana is illegal I'm sure that you, or somebody you know, or several people you know have smoked marijuana anyways. Prohibition doesn't help, we tried it with alcohol and it failed miserably. Why does America insist on repeating the same stupid mistakes? Not to mention the medicinal uses it can stimulate an appetite in an anorexic person, relieve nausea in a cancer patient, and also religious uses. Rastafarians, Hindus and Buddhists all regularly advise the use of marijuana, just like Christians do with wine sometimes. Also for the Christian factor, Christians that are opposed to marijuana because their drug policy in the bible, I have five words for you: separation of church and state. It can and is easily argue that the prohibition of marijuana is unconstitutional, so lets legalize it and make progress.
*Yes this is biast feel free to argue my point of view but don't argue that this isn't a debatable subject.
